Causes and Home Remedies for Loss of Appetite

Appetite changes are common with cancer and cancer treatment. Poor appetite has a multitude of causes, but the most likely cause lies in the digestive tract and nearby organs. Individuals with poor appetite or appetite loss may eat less than usual, not feel hungry at all, or feel full (satiated) after eating only a small amount. Appetite loss is common in people with cancer. Certain types of cancer, including ovarian, pancreatic, and stomach cancers, can cause a loss of appetite, usually by affecting a person's metabolism. Appetite loss also occurs in 80% to 90% of people with advanced cancer for various reasons, including changes in metabolism, early satiety from ascites, and other symptoms of cancer.

Causes of Loss of Appetite:

There are many reasons that cause lack of appetite or reduction in appetite. These reasons can be linked to not only physical health but also mental/emotional frame of mind. Apart from serious health conditions and eating disorders, some of the reasons for loss of appetite may be stress, depression and anxiety. It is quite possible that an external factor as a personal or non-personal tragedy has affected the person enough for him to lose his appetite.

Relationship crisis, a work problems are a few of the many mental reasons that may cause appetite loss. Loss of appetite is also caused due to improper and unhealthy eating habits. Habits such as eating a lot of sweets, drinking soft drinks or sodas between meals, consuming large, untimely meals cause imbalance in appetite. The stomach is unable to digest such large quantities at once; it prefers to break down small portions at a time. This causes imbalance in its working.

Struggling with cancer or some other serious health condition, eating disorders, or hormone imbalance are some of the physical contributing factors of loss of appetite, lack of appetite, a poor appetite, or no appetite. Stress, anxiety, and depression and are some of the most common mental or emotional contributing factors of appetite loss, lack of appetite, poor appetite, or no appetite at all. We can also experience loss of appetite, no appetite, poor appetite or lack of appetite due to a spiritual contributing factor such as dealing with death or the thought of death, intense grief, a major life crisis, or huge shift in a relationship.

Loss of appetite is also helped along by bad or improper eating habits displayed by the person. Some causes of appetite loss in a person include eating sweets and drinking soft drinks between meals, the consumption of large and heavy meals which are rich in saturated fats at odd times. The stomach finds it very hard to digest all types of deep-fried foods especially when they are eaten in large amounts. At the same time, the digestive system finds it very easy to deal with small meals which are rich in foods like the vegetables and fruits-these also taste good and promote the health of the person. To promote a hearty appetite, it is important that the food consumed tastes good-this is a vital factor to promote hearty appetites.

The application of an ice-bag over the stomach for half an hour before meals, and a cool hip bath once or twice daily, will go a long way in curing anorexia.
